A little turn and then they go away – The term “metaverse” (metaversein English) was a buzzword very fashionable in 2022. It has been put to all kinds of sauces, including very bad ones. Today, the enthusiasm is waning and the projects lacking concrete in this area are disappearing. This time it’s the giant Disney who throws in the towel his metaverse ambitions.

The Walt Disney Company had probably seen things (too) big in September 2022. Son ex-CEO, Bob Chapek (who will be fired 2 months later), had then announced a big plunge of his group into digital. Non-fungible tokens (NFT), Web3and even the « M-word » (according to Bob Chapek himself) had been pronounced. The latter is therefore of course the “M” of Metavers.
But barely a few months later: crash! According to people “familiar with the subject” quoted by the Wall Street Journal on March 28, 2023, Disney would have simply decided to remove its division working on the metaverse.
Taking a frame in a “wider restructuring” of the large entertainment group – which could affect up to 7,000 jobs -, the shutdown of its unit dedicated to metaverse would result in the dismissal of 50 employees. The latter was originally created in February 2022.
Now that the hype without head or tail seems past concerning the (yet very real) potentials of the metaverses, only the solid projects. This aspect of the future Internet, composed of digital worlds (networks) interconnected, will still require years of work and study before having a form concrete enough to train a real (and surely strong) adoption.
